This is my first internet radio settop box, and I was impressed with how easy it is to setup the system to sync with a wireless network.
APPEARANCE: The IR2500 comes in a compact and surprisingly very lightweight package, with the front face half occupied by a speaker and half occupied by a control panel comprising a volume knob, various other buttons, and a dial/select button. There is a flared speaker port at the rear, and a low-resolution blue LED screen on the front. The speaker quality is adequate- nothing mind blowing, but at least it allows for external connections.
SETUP: The 2500 easily detected multiple wireless networks in my vicinity, and while a better system of entering the WEP/WPA key could be utilized, the current method did its job, and wasn't terribly cumbersome. The 2500 also automatically downloaded and installed firmware, and set the time correctly. Internet radio and NPR stations were easily setup and broadcast within a few minutes. Brought a smile to my face. Pandora, while requiring registration on the Grace website (minor annoyance), easily streamed from the IR2500.
I did however have trouble setting up the IR2500 to stream shared music folders from a PC. I followed the exact directions as required in the manual, but was unable to detect a PC with shared music. This merits the loss of one star. I don't have a Sirius account, so I couldn't test that aspect.
The IR2500 would benefit from a better method of making menu selections; when there is a long list of options, some sort of faster scrolling method (other than the selection dial) would work more efficiently.
PROS:
- Lightweight, small footprint
- Easy setup, access to thousands of internet radio stations within a few minutes.
- Allows connection to external speakers
- Automatic detection and installation of firmware updates
CONS:
- Low resolution monochromatic LCD screen (should be using color like on the Logitech Squeezebox)
- WEP/WPA key entering method needs improvement
- Need to register on grace website to use Pandora
- Difficulty accessing shared PC music
CONCLUSION: I think it's a very good, entry level internet radio system. Considering that even my own computer sometimes has trouble detecting wireless networks, I most appreciated the fact that it's easy to setup with existing wireless networks. It has a few quirks that will hopefully be addressed in the next iteration.
